Be Your Own North

One of the first things I ‘remembered’ that I knew to be true when I came across this understanding was to trust my own instincts, my guiding compass, and ‘be my own North’. To trust that I will know what to do, which path to follow and what actions to take (if any are needed) which are right for me.

It sounds so simple and obvious, and indeed it is, but it’s easy to forget that we, every one of us, know what is right for us. Actually we are the only ones who can truly know. We are all unique and individual, but concurrently we are all the same; we are all human beings doing the best we can and making decisions which seems right at the time.

I’ve made decisions and walked down paths that, looking back, I knew were not right for me. The ‘feeling’ was wrong. I know I’ve got a strong gut instinct and if the feeling is ‘icky’, unsettling or just not right, it’s a clear sign that the decision, path or action is not for me.

Does this sound familiar to you?

I’m sure we all have examples of this, decisions we’ve made or actions we’ve taken that, when we reflect, we knew were not right for us at the time. We ignored the gentle whisper of our wisdom and instead heeded to the demanding voice in our heads or the insistence of others who believe they have our best interests at heart and we ignored the feeling inside.

That’s not to say that it can’t work out though. None of us know the what the future holds (this is both a blessing and a curse!) and sometimes we need to ‘go wrong’ before we can ‘go right’. Or maybe we had to go down that path before we could actually know that it was ‘wrong’. The power of hindsight is a wonderful thing…or is it that we just see things differently at different times? Does it just depend on our state of mind?

I’ve learnt enough to know that, if a clear decision or action isn’t obvious, then I’m not ready and I need to be patient for the answer to come to me – this was, and remains, a tough lesson for me.

Have you ever wondered at the marvels in nature? Of how migratory birds instinctively know the route to warmer climes, how elephants always find their way to water or how turtles return to the same beach on which they were born to lay their eggs? Do the animals use landmarks as maps, the magnetic pull of the Earth or another sense entirely? These examples of innate animal instincts demonstrate to us that without the noise of a busy human mind, they are able to listen to the knowing inside them and do what is right for them to survive.

I urge you to remember that you have this same ‘knowing’ inside of you! Calm your mind, listen to the whisper of your wisdom, trust your instincts, and believe that only you know what’s right for you. Walk your own path without fear of judgement and be free.

Be your own North.

With love, Becca x
